Post traumatic stress leads to growth in female survivors of Katrina years down the road

Jean Rhodes of U. of Massachusetts Boston and her group found that greater stress from hurricane Katrina was associated with greater growth years later in the low income adult female population they studied. They suggest that for some survivors of disaster a greater sense of meaning and purpose develops following severe trauma. Experiential learning proven durable and deeper

Sian Bellock and co authors published studies in the April 24, 2015 online issue of Psychological Science and also in How the Body Knows its Mind (Atria Books, 2015) showing that, when students learn by doing, they learn better experientially than simply by reading or hearing. Psychodramatists should be able to use this material.

Addressing the empathy deficit: Beliefs about the malleability of empathy predict effortful responses when empathy is challenging.
Schumann, Karina; Zaki, Jamil; Dweck, Carol S.
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol 107(3), Sep 2014, 475-493. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/a0036738
Abstract
Empathy is often thought to occur automatically. Yet, empathy frequently breaks down when it is difficult or distressing to relate to people in need, suggesting that empathy is often not felt reflexively. Indeed, the United States as a whole is said to be displaying an empathy deficit. When and why does empathy break down, and what predicts whether people will exert effort to experience empathy in challenging contexts? Across 7 studies, we found that people who held a malleable mindset about empathy (believing empathy can be developed) expended greater empathic effort in challenging contexts than did people who held a fixed theory (believing empathy cannot be developed). Specifically, a malleable theory of empathy—whether measured or experimentally induced—promoted (a) more self-reported effort to feel empathy when it is challenging (Study 1); (b) more empathically effortful responses to a person with conflicting views on personally important sociopolitical issues (Studies 2–4); (c) more time spent listening to the emotional personal story of a racial outgroup member (Study 5); and (d) greater willingness to help cancer patients in effortful, face-to-face ways (Study 6). Study 7 revealed a possible reason for this greater empathic effort in challenging contexts: a stronger interest in improving one’s empathy. Together, these data suggest that people’s mindsets powerfully affect whether they exert effort to empathize when it is needed most, and these data may represent a point of leverage in increasing empathic behaviors on a broad scale. POTENS- Psychodrama on the Educational Stage is funded by the European Union as part of Lifelong Learning: Grundtvig

Approved total budget (in EUR) – 399 355

Duration: 1 October 2008 – 30 September 2010

The POTENS project is a piloting initiative focused on developing new training methodology which combines psychodrama and adult education. The methodology will be focused on the acquisition of three competences:

Learning to learn (insight into one’s potential, building on prior knowledge and experiences)
Interpersonal and social competences (behavioural patterns realized and corrected; conflict resolution)
Cultural expression (psychodrama enhances creative expression of ideas, experiences and emotions through work on stage)
The main goal of the project is to work out a set of training techniques to support and improve teaching/learning processes, especially to empower adult students from marginalized social contexts to gain an insight into their own potential (POTENS) and develop social and personal competences accordingly, which put them in a stronger position in the society and the labor market.

The main project activities:

running pilot workshops for AE trainers by psychodrama practitioners in all 4 partner countries
editing 2 publications for educators: handbook (a paper-based publication in 5 European languages) and documentary film (DVD)
organizing Grundtvig seminar
creating the project website
The POTENS consortium consists of 5 partners from 4 EU countries:

Grodzki Theatre Association, Poland (leader),
Societatea de Psihodramă “J.L. Moreno”, Romania,

More on using psychodrama in education in EU

From: Carlos Ramirez <carlosramirezgarcia@gmail.com>
Subject: Patie – Psychodrama as Tool in Education
Date: June 30, 2015 at 11:52:23 AM MDT
To: list@grouptalkweb.org

Dear all,
I write to the group to share information about a wonderfull project I have been part for the last two years. It is a program to promote Psychodrama for adult educators funded by EU, http://www.patie.eu/
The Patie program is based on the Potens Project http://potens.com.pl/ also about the use of Psychodrama in the classroom.
In Spain it has been conducted by Alecop ( http://www.alecop.com/equipment/index.php/es/) a company engaged in innovative learning, learning solutions, learning equipment and so…
Materials have been created covering major Psychodrama topics and 64 hours Pilots studies have been conducted in 5 EU countries, with extremelly successfull results.
I will share with the list the materials (handbooks) when ready.
This type of approach to Psychodrama dissemination opens new spaces for practice and may enrich the work of the educators in the classroom.
Thanks for your attention:

ALECOP LAUNCHES A PILOT COURSE IN PSYCHODRAMA FOR ADULT EDUCATORS
The cooperative company from Mondragon Corporation culminates successfully the first course in the country oriented to professors empowerment in group management through Psychodrama, a group therapy that uses dramatic art techniques, that has involved 13 participants from the Basque country .
“I ’ve noticed a change in the classroom that, probably, is due to my own change during this course. The school year has been difficult, but its closure was really good ”, explains one of the participants during the pilot sessions of Psychodrama for educators, which have taken place during March and June in Alecop cooperative.
The framework of this course is the PaTiE Project (Psychodrama as a Tool in Education) in which the company Alecop has been working since 2013 and which is founded by the European Union. The main goal is to design psychodrama training materials adapted to improve adult educators’ skills. Thus, the training materials performed by training institutions from Italy, Greece, Poland and Spain, train to empower the professors in conflict management, the communication in the classroom and facilitation of the learning process, the creation of a confident environment in the group and the management of heterogeneous groups, among other capabilities. These skills are based on the research done
by PaTiE project among adult educators from all the participating countries in order to identify their real needs.
It seems that the course, however, has exceeded the initial expectations and the participants have shown their satisfaction with the learned techniques, as can be excerpted from the feedback and final evaluation sheets. They have stressed the personal and professional learning acquired during the pilot, as well as in the chance of group work training, the high experiential component of the course or the excellent organizers. They mentioned specially the psychologist that directed the workshops, Carlos Ramírez, who has a Degree in Psychology and Psychotherapy and has completed his training in Psychology, Psychotherapy
and Sports Science in England, Scotland, Canada and the US. “I think that this course should be included in the official training for educators ”, states one of the professors.
Pilot course has consisted in eight sessions, all founded by the Project budget, with around eight hours per session, during which the participants have had the opportunity to learn about all the topics designed for the course: Introduction to the Psychodrama, Warm-up,
The power of the group, Role playing, Conflict solving, Working with symbols, Group
mapping and Sharing. After the pilot, the partners in the project are now improving the
training materials and finishing the design of the course with a view in offering it the next
year among the interested educators.
